![]() ![]() There's quite a lot in my first book about how that physical geography shaped me, but also about the emotional geography of my family and my parents - and how that perhaps went on to manifest later in my life. "I grew up in the Orkney Islands at the north of Scotland, on a sheep farm on the Atlantic Coast, edged by cliffs and looking out to the ocean. ![]() Liptrot spoke to Eleanor Wachtel from her home in Yorkshire, England. ![]() She also reflects on the digital world and its growing place in our lives - from an app that traces the phases of the moon to following her lost love on social media. In Liptrot's latest book, The Instant, she focuses on a single year spent in Berlin and her experience there of urban wildlife and a broken romance. ![]() She describes that journey in her bestselling 2015 book, The Outrun, which won awards for both memoir and works about conservation and nature. Amy Liptrot writes about extremes - from growing up on a cliffside farm in Scotland's rugged Orkney Islands, to her struggles with alcoholism while living a wild life in London in her 20s.įollowing rehab, she returned to Orkney, finding solace in the natural environment - and a new sense of self. ![]() ![]() ![]() She does not always understand her "often irrational" peers and finds their lives "messy." Cora describes her husband Fred as a kind man who surely will learn to accept Quito as his own son. ![]() ![]() In order to survive, she explains, she adopted Apache ways and finally became accustomed to life with the tribe. Hook punches the troublemaker and secures food and clothing for his charges, and Cora begins to tell Hook about her experiences with Nanchez. While the three await the stagecoach at a nearby station, a local settler insults Cora and grabs her son, whereupon she breaks her silence, screaming that the man is an animal and that she will kill anyone who harms the boy. ![]() As Nanchez looks on, Hook leaves the fort with Cora and the boy, intending to deliver them to Fred in San Miguel, a small town near Tucson. Cora, refusing to speak to anyone, accompanies her boy and the other prisoners to the fort, where Colonel Weaver, after suggesting that Cora should have killed herself rather than be taken as Nanchez's squaw, conducts a search and finally locates the woman's white husband Fred. Cavalry finally captures Apache chief Nanchez, described by one of the soldiers as "the worst butcher in the territory." As the troops are rounding up the families of the killed and captured braves, they discover that the mother of Nanchez's small son Quito is Cora Sutliff, a white woman captured by the tribe some years earlier. ![]() ![]() The Harry Potter fan will find many, many references in Rowell’s world and characters, from Baz’s Draco-like sneer to Simon’s untenable Potter-like hair, but these references are thankfully not cut-out parodies they’re smart, frequently funny and feel incredibly contemporary. ![]() ![]() ![]() Carry On has so much heart to it that it’s almost a tangible presence in the book itself. Her portrayal of them is sharp, sometimes ironic, but never without empathy. Rowell has always written teenagers – their fears and dreams, their romantic entanglements – with skill. Not everyone is too happy about this event, especially not his roommate/arch nemesis Baz. Taking its cue from the ‘chosen one’ trope of fantasy stories, Carry On’s orphaned Simon Stone has been plucked from obscurity thanks to a prophecy. (In my defence, Rowell’s tense, emotion-driven storytelling is unfairly addictive.) Being a quick reader is usually a blessing but Carry On turned out to be one of those rare cases where I regretted reaching that final page so soon. I laughed, I cried the book is simply, utterly, delightful. ![]() Like other fans of Rowell’s earlier books I’ve been very much anticipating the release of her new novel and I’m happy to report that it was worth the wait. A Harry Potter-esque romantic adventure story set in a boarding school from Rainbow Rowell? Yes please, thank you very much. ![]() ![]() ![]() She ricochets between crippling sadness and explosive rage, haunting guilt and a desperate desire to make sense of what happened to her son. Once a quintessential doting mother, Marcia’s loss of both her son and the intimacy of her marriage has left her in total isolation, despite a support network that includes her sister and a family liaison officer who has become a stoic, intuitive friend. Marcia is a remarkable woman, and Edwards gives her plenty of space to work her way through a rollercoaster of emotions. ![]() But as the trial moves forward, the world outside the Williams’ front door comes into agonizing, terrifying focus. While Marcia summons the strength to attend the trial from the very beginning, partly in hopes of gaining some closure from the proceedings, Lloydie completely withdraws, spending his time gardening and avoiding one-on-one time with his wife. Tyson Manley, a troubled boy the same age as Ryan, has been charged with the crime, suspected of stabbing Ryan after learning they were involved with the same girl. Nearly a year after losing Ryan, their 16-year-old son, parents Marcia and Lloydie Williams are bracing themselves for the beginning of the murderer’s trial. The Mother is a grounded work that explores not only the deeply personal experience of losing a child, but the larger societal context in which children fall through the cracks and grow up too fast. In her second novel, author Yvvette Edwards probes the depths of grief, loss and hope. ![]() ![]() But resisting Sam, and playing the role of an elegant movie star, proves more difficult than she ever imagined?especially when she learns the real reason Fangli so desperately needs her help.
